New Physiotherapy Clinic Opens in February

Opening in February is a new physiotherapy clinic with a difference. There are no machines and no exercise equipment at Body Check Physiotherapy and the therapist spends your whole treatment session working one-on-one with you. The main difference is the use of a new manual technique called Matrix Repatterning.

"Matrix Repatterning was developed by Canadian Dr. George Roth and is a gentle, hands-on technique," explains Shauna DeSouza-Whitehead of Body Check Physiotherapy. "It uses the scientific knowledge that, from the cell upward, our bodies are built on the ever larger patterns of the tensegrity structural concept. This is basically saying that all the tissues of the body have the same basic molecular structure with variation in the configuration for the speciality of the different organs, muscles and so on."

Every cell within our bodies is connected by a fine web-Iike structure called 'fascia' or connective tissue. Connective tissue is the material responsible for keeping all our organs in place rather than being moved by forces such as gravity or impact.

Because of the continuity of this connective tissue, strain or tension in one area will be transmitted throughout the body much in the same way that a pull in a sweater at, say, the hip will transfer lines of force through different directions of the fabric. In the human body, this works to produce pain and misalignment of joints and muscles and strain in and around organs that may be far from the site of the problem. "The location of the symptom of pain, although uncomfortable," emphasizes DeSouza-Whitehead, "is not a reliable indicator of the problem that has caused it, or of what needs to be treated."

The Matrix practitioner relies completely on the body tissues to direct where treatment is needed. Body tissues have their own electrical charge that changes when a significant injury has occurred. This leads injured tissues to feel stiff or more rigid, or have increased tension.

The Matrix practitioner can feel this change in electrical charge during an assessment to determine the location of the primary problems. Often, ancient injuries -- perhaps even ones that have been long forgotten -- can have a significant effect on a person's current health. With precise determination of the directions that the traumatic forces have entered the body and gentle pressure to release these energetic forces, even old injuries can be treated. In many cases, treatment provides permanent relief of symptoms, that is, unless the area is re-injured.  When the body is rebalanced, its function in all areas improves and the chances of re-injury are decreased.

The goal of Matrix Repatterning is to release structural imbalances in the body to normalize and support its self healing ability .

Matrix Repatterning is of benefit to the athlete or performer (past or present) as well as the average person seeking a reduction in pain and improved wellbeing.

Body Check Physiotherapy, located in the Pilates Plus Centre at 1295 Dundas Street (519-537-2107), is now accepting appointments.

Shauna DeSouza-Whitehead is a registered Physiotherapist with 30 years experience.  She has worked in acute care, rehabilitation, outpatient clinics and nursing homes. She has been using Matrix Repatterning for the past three years. She has recently completed the process to become a Certified Matrix Practitioner.
